Charles Mulekwa

Advisory Committee Member

Mulekwa was educated for most of his life in Uganda. He has a Diploma in Education (Uganda), a Masters in Scriptwriting in 1999 from the University of Birmingham (UK), and a PhD in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies (USA).

Presently, he is a Lecturer at Makerere University, and also serves as a Consultant for Drama and Cultural Production at various levels. Charles Mulekwa is an actor and writer, known for movies The Last King of Scotland (2006), Full of Energy (2004), and Queen of Katwe (2016) Mulekwa has published plays, which have been staged to great critical acclaim in Uganda, has won local and international awards including the 1996 BBC African Performance Award for Nothing Against You.

The plays include, The Woman in Me, The Eleventh Commandment, Bond of the Knife, Where Power Lies and Hands of My People. Radio and video series include Secrets of Bomboka, Kafunda Stage, Fires of Hope and A Question of Children. A number of these works have been translated into some local languages.

To the Art Fund Advisory Committee, Mulekwa brings on board a unique element of performance and acting by virtue of his background and experiences gained over the years in the film/arts industry.
